Saturn Announces Aura Green Line Hybrid Pricing

The General Motors Corporation’s Saturn brand earlier announced the pricing of its new mild hybrid Aura Green Line – the second vehicle in the brand’s product line that incorporates the automaker’s belt alternator starter system. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of the hybrid will start at ,695 which already does include the destination charge. As such, the vehicle will be the lowest-priced hybrid on the market for this year.

In addition to its value-focused price, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has certified that all Aura Green Line buyers will qualify for a tax credit of ,300. “The Aura Green Line is a great value among the hybrids in the mid-size car segment,” said Saturn General Manager Jill Lajdziak. “With a starting sticker price over ,000 less than any mid-sized hybrid sedan and a ,300 tax credit, it makes true hybrid fuel savings available to more people than ever before.”

The Saturn Aura Green Line’s EPA fuel economy rating of 28 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway reflects up to a 30 percent upgrading in EPA combined fuel economy compared to the non-hybrid Aura XE model. But ratings vary depending on driving conditions.

The Aura, which has been on sale since late March, is assembled at the GM’s Fairfax Plant in Kansas City, Kan., and the Green Line hybrid models are rolling out at Saturn retail facilities. Like the VUE, the Aura Green Line is equipped with the 2.4L Ecotec engine that is blended to an electric motor and the 4T45-E four-speed automatic transmission. The powertrain is rated at 164 horsepower and 159 lbf•ft of torque. The electric motor boosts the gasoline engine’s performance during launch and under wide-open throttle.

The Aura Green Line’s hybrid system combines refined controls with an upgraded electric motor blended to the engine. The system of the hybrid offers dramatic fuel economy gains by providing an electric power assist during acceleration, through early fuel cut-off during deceleration with torque smoothing. The system also shuts the engine when idle. Aside from this, Aura’s system also captures electrical energy through regenerative braking.

Saturn’s new hybrid sedan is based on the all-new Aura midsize sedan. The hybrid was given the 2007 North American Car of the Year award. The Green Line is equipped with comprehensive safety package that earned Aura five stars in government frontal and side-impact crash tests. Moreover, the hybrid is considered to be one of the safest vehicles available in the market.

Outstanding standard features of the Aura Green Line hybrid include the Saturn cold air intake, a dual-stage front, side head-curtain and front-seat thorax protection air bags, the StabiliTrak electronic stability control, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, and GM’s OnStar safety and security system.

The Aura Green Line is one of four hybrids that the automaker has announced. The 2007 Vue Green Line, which debuted last summer, offers the highest EPA estimated highway fuel economy of any SUV which reaches up to 32 mpg. In 2008, Saturn will offer the Vue Green Line with the first front-wheel-drive application of GM’s new, 2-mode hybrid system that is expected to deliver up to a 45 percent improvement in combined city and highway fuel economy compared with the non-hybrid Vue.

A plug-in hybrid, which has the edge to double the fuel efficiency of any sport utility vehicle on the road, is in the works for the Vue. This hybrid SUV will offer an enhanced version of GM’s 2-mode hybrid system and plug-in technology. When ready, a Lithium-ion battery pack, along with highly efficient electronics and powerful electric motors, will reach even greater fuel economy gains.

No Hybrid? Smaller Ways to Go Green

By Peter DeMarco

Ever gotten a parking ticket from the carbon-footprint police? I drive a gas-wasting Chevy Tahoe, and for a time someone in the neighborhood would routinely plant orange, “Violation: Earth” citations on my windshield. “To SUV Driver,” they read. “Time to buy a Hybrid!”

My Tahoe has served me well, but it gets an abysmal 12 miles per gallon. Do I need such a big vehicle? No. But buying a new car can be expensive, let alone a new green car. While I am, in fact, saving up for a hybrid or a clean-burning diesel, I’m probably a year away from such a purchase.

Still, for those of you in my position, there are ways to “greenify” your not-so-green car. You can save gasoline by keeping your tires inflated and by driving in less of a rush. You can carpool. And you can buy environmentally friendly car parts, such as recyclable windshield wipers and air filters.

With Earth Day approaching April 22, here’s a list of some simple, green purchases for your clunker. I know I’m going to try at least a few.

Reusable filters

Your oil-change guy points out how disgustingly dirty your air filter is, so you fork over for a new one. The good news is you’ll be upping your miles per gallon, as clogged filters decrease engine efficiency. But your old filter is probably going to a landfill. Next time, buy a reusable, cotton air filter that you can wash out when it gets dirty. K&N Engineering of Riverside, Calif., has been making such air filters for more than 40 years, but others are on the market as well. They cost about more. Buying one is “the single most important thing one can do to greenify their ride,” pledges the greenest auto mechanic I know, Somerville’s Frank Marotta Jr.

Recyclable wipers

Jamak Fabrication, a Texas company, sells windshield wiper blades made from silicone, instead of rubber, that are being marketed as “the world’s first fully recyclable wiper blade.”  When the blades fray, you send the squeegee portions back to the company, which grinds them into new manufacturing materials. The wiper frames go in your residential recycling bin.  Tripledge Green blades save landfill space and require no oil to produce, as silicone rubber isn’t petroleum-based, the company says.  And they cost about as much as standard, rubber blades.

Energy-making shocks

Shock absorbers resemble pumps, right? So, what if you could capture the energy created when your shocks pump away on a bumpy road?  Well, three recent MIT graduates have created shock absorbers that do just that.  “Now more than ever, looking at all the sources of waste on the vehicle is essential,” says Zack Anderson, one of the cofounders of Cambridge-based Levant Power, maker of GenShock.  The concept has won numerous awards, with the shocks promising to increase fuel economy by as much as 6 percent for heavy vehicles.  The drawback is that GenShocks aren’t available yet for passenger cars. But stay tuned.

Biodegradable motor oil

You know that famous quote about how laws are like sausages — it’s better not to see them being made? My guess is that G-Oil falls in the same category. The biodegradable oil is made with “renewable animal fats,” or, put more bluntly, waste cow fat from Oklahoma slaughterhouses.  But if you focus on the fact that the product is organic, has won a Popular Mechanics magazine editor’s choice award, and is good enough to be the official motor oil of the American Le Mans Series racing competition, you might be swayed. “Our motto is save the Earth, sacrifice nothing,” says Courtney Jacobs, spokeswoman for Stamford, Conn.-based Green Earth Technologies, G-Oil’s manufacturer.

Waterless soaps

There are a number of them on the market — such as Freedom Waterless Car Wash and Laura Klein’s Green Car Waterless Car Wash & Shine — that claim to save hundreds of gallons of water per car per year. Just spray and wipe off the grime.  Klein’s soap “is made with plant-based, nontoxic ingredients so it won’t contaminate our waterways or harm wildlife or pets,” says the company’s website.  Sounds good, right?  Well, before you buy, make sure you read all the ingredients, as no one’s monitoring such green claims, says Jonathan Scott, spokesman for Clean Water Action, the nation’s largest grass-roots water issues group.  And if the prices scare you away — the soaps run about a bottle — all is not lost, Scott says. Using a bucket, a light-mist nozzle on your garden hose, and a squirt of dishwashing liquid, all you need are a few gallons of water to wash a car, he says.

Carbon offsets

If your guilt over driving an SUV or some other big clunker is too much to bear, you can do what I just did: Purchase a carbon offset.

To make amends for the fuel you’re wasting, donate to an environmental project that helps society conserve energy or reduce emissions.

For instance, if you purchase an SUV offset at envirocitizen.org, your donation funds the Greater New Bedford Landfill Gas Utilization Project, which uses greenhouses gases seeping from the landfill to fuel generators that produce electricity.

You can find several offset programs online — some reward you with bumper stickers — but I picked EnviroCitizen because it supports a local cause.

“No calculators, no questionnaires. Just choose from the prebuilt offsets we have created and check out,” organizer Mike Valenti told me.

“We e-mail a certificate within 24 hours.”

Maybe now the carbon-footprint police will leave me alone.

Envirocitizen.org is a comprehensive ecommerce website that combines robust commerce, content, and community.  We believe that we have created the most comprehensive site to date to make eco-friendly products, services, and information available to individuals who wish to live a green, more eco-friendly lifestyle.  Our site offers a very broad and diverse array of eco-friendly products as well as comprehensive, authoritative information and environmental education.  Additionally, users can enjoy the sense of community created by participating in our Forum.

Michigan Auto Times Announces Top 10 Picks

The winners for Design Challenge #2 are in! I submitted a microgame, Zoom In, but it seems it didn’t make the cut. No big deal. I made it on my first day upon playing the game, and all of these are made by people who seem to have understood the engine inside and out. I submitted Parrot Top for Design Challenge #3 though. I hope it makes it, as I’ve since gotten better at making these. 1. “Marathon Day” from Leiden: This one is easy enough to understand and easy enough to win consistently. There are no glaring flaws in it, though it’s interesting to see a button that moves. Interesting attempt to make things dynamic. 2. “8-Bit Hockey” from Ché: A very weird variation on air hockey, with Mario bouncing a bubble with a Blooper. The Blooper is programmed to always get the ball on the first go and miss on the second. 3. “Penalty Kill” from Brandon: You can constantly click on the goalie to keep him defending the puck. I don’t know if it’s intentional or not, but there’s no way I can defend the goal for the entire length of the microgame otherwise. 4. “HOMERUN!!!!!” from Jalli: These are sprites taken from Super Mario RPG. Nice transcribing of those sprites to outside of its context, but the baseball can be difficult to see. 5. “Turtle Golf” from Lemmy: It took me a while to figure out what you were supposed to do here. It seems you click on where it says “FORE!” to swing the ball. I should crack this one open and see how the ball’s “Bounce” command works. 6. “USA Football

Michigan Auto Times Announces Top 10 Picks

DETROIT, M.I. – Michigan Auto Times has released Top 10 Picks for consumers looking to buy a new vehicle. The list is a precursor to the 2011 review scheduled to debut on the Michigan Auto Times website in the next few months.
The Top 10 Picks buying guide includes cars that are the best buys in their respective classes based on performance, safety, looks, features, options and price.
Below are the list and highlights:
•    Green Car: Toyota Prius, featuring class-leading fuel economy
•    Family Sedan: Buick LaCrosse, upscale features and performance in an affordable price
•    Small Sedan: Honda Civic, reliability and roomy interior
•    Compact SUV: Chevrolet Equinox, smooth handling paired with attractive design
•    Pickup Truck: GMC Sierra, more payload and more towing for a better price
•    Minivan: Dodge Grand Caravan, sound safety features and seating flexibility
•    Subcompact Car: Ford Fiesta, top fuel economy with options uncommon to compact cars
•    Luxury Sedan: Lexus LS, quiet ride, rewarding performance
•    Sports Car: Nissan 370Z, more sports car for less money
•    Rising through the Ranks: Buick Regal, sportiness, fuel efficiency, and youthful reinvention
The Michigan Auto Times editors reviewed many models of all makes and styles on the road today, made use of its own vehicle comparisons and checked the results against some of the most commonly read car review sites to see how the results agreed with others in the industry.
The editors learned in their cross-sectional study of peers that certain models were underserved and overlooked, and some models should have received more coverage and positive press.
For this reason, those at Michigan Auto Times feel car buyers receive a better review with their list when compared with others, and audiences will see certain models on the Michigan Auto Times list that were not named as top picks by other review sites.
To view the full results, or to rate any of the above mentioned vehicles, visit http://www.miautotimes.com
MI Auto Times covers all Michigan automotive news all the time featuring vehicle recall information, Michigan automaker news, vehicle ratings and comparisons, and everything else auto-related Michigan and world readers need to know.
