My Dads ’56 Ford Pickup

July 11, 2011 by

This 56 Ford F100 has been in our extended family since new. It was originally purchased in Pixley, California. Yes, that’s right; the one over by Hooterville, Crabb’s Corner, and Petticoat Junction. Pixley is the only real town named in those old shows. Anyhow someone in my mother’s family passed away so her dad went to California from Yoncalla, Oregon to retrieve it and bring it back to the ranch they lived on. Being a short-narrow box, it wasn’t much use on the ranch so it got parked under an oak tree where it sat for at nearly 15 years. I never saw Grandad drive it in my memory which goes back to around 1965-66. When he passed away my mother inherited the truck and my pop went to restoring it, around 1976. He went through the motor pretty quickly and discovered it was mechanically sound although aesthetically a wreck. The paint, seafoam green, with the white top, was completely oxidized, and the wood plank box floor was rotted out. After getting it ambulatory again he had a local fella redo the bench seat in a simple vinyl, bought some wide Road Huggers (70s in front, 60s in back) and chrome wheels, and slapped a cherry bomb underneath it for the appropriate growl. Then my senior year he presented me they keys so that I could drive the two and a half blocks to school. That was 1979. It still had all the original glass, which was pretty pitted, and as I recall when I got to school first thing I would need to go wash the black residue off my hands. The moisture over the

Ford Reacts on Auto Industry Challenges

Ford Motor Company Executive Chairman Bill Ford said last Thursday that the local auto industry is suffering from the result of its responding dully to foreign competitors and the continuously increasing demand for clean-environment vehicles.

In a speech during the Detroit Regional Chamber’s yearly Mackinac Policy Conference, Ford said that the industry is undergoing reorganization that results to the closure of the plants, layoffs, rising unemployment and a falling tax base. The conference was a gathering of 1,700 leaders in the field of business, politics and civic organizations.

In his speech, he said that legal concerns about global warming, energy security and the cost of gasoline have made a rush and pressure that lead to poorly formed solutions. He recalled four years ago when addressing the Detroit chamber, he had warned about the endless attack of foreign-made cars and other problems that pressure U.S. automakers.

In the conference he said that much of what he warned about then is happening now. Good thing is that the industry along with the others who are relying on it is doing their part.

For years of associating with environmental groups and tackling about green issues, many in auto manufacturing considered him as a “crazy radical”. Fortunately, people now understand that maintaining a fine environment is the critical issue for the country’s future evolution and prosperity.

His company’s projects such as the Ford Rouge Center, a brown field reclamation project, and the development of the Escape Hybrid SUV, according to Ford, please him. One thing he regretted was that they did not move further and faster.

To reduce carbon dioxide emissions, local automakers are investing billions in technology. However, according to Ford, the industry produces only 20 percent of U.S. end products. In lieu of this, he suggested that a national energy policy be implemented as well as a forum for bringing together other carbon emitters. He firmly adhered to these in order to come up with sound solutions.

He said that huge economic opportunities for Michigan are research and development of solutions to climate change.

Ford said that his company has the assets to transform themselves into a leading research and development center. And this includes the intellectual capital, a skilled workforce and a best quality of higher education system. He believed utilizing these assets will contribute a lot in the preservation of conventional jobs and creation of next-generation high technology jobs.

When the audience asked about health care, Ford responded that its reformation was critical for automakers and other manufacturers. He added that it is a broken system that if not solved immediately will pave way for the country’s difficulty in producing anything.

Rep. John Dingell, a Dearborn Democrat and the chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said that auto mobile makers have been too unconcerned when it comes to health care and trade issues. He said that as if they are too hesitant in seeking action from the government. According to him, instead of simply complaining about their problems, the companies should tandem with specific solutions and obligate progress.

Dingell also said that the companies are doing nothing to help themselves. They just think the problem, but do not care to solve them. He gave the American auto industry a challenge to stand up for the benefit of many.

Sen. Debbie Stabenow said that the Senate Democratic Steering Committee would tackle automakers, other manufacturers and labor unions. Their meeting regarding this will be held in Washington, D.C. next Wednesday.

Green Ford Parts

Green Ford Parts

Ford Motor Company, which debuted in the industry more than a century ago, is one of the leading automobile companies worldwide. This American automaker takes pride in its competent sales across the globe that makes this brand a household name especially in the United States. Aside from ensuring that its models can perform well, the company is also keen in improving its Ford Parts to become efficient yet environment-friendly.

Through the years, there are Ford Parts that came out that not only improve the performance of the vehicle but at the same time keep it “green”. Ford Motors applied various automobile technologies to further keep its vehicles ‘sensitive’ enough to care for the environment. The catalytic converter, for example, is used by the American automaker in its cars, sport utility vehicles, and trucks to keep the noxious emissions on safe levels. With this auto part intact in the system, system exhaust fumes produced by during the internal engine combustion is treated before released into the air. In this way, harmful gases are lessened because of the catalytic converter.

Another component installed in the company’s vehicles is the oxygen sensor. This diminutive part is strategically placed along the exhaust manifold and near the catalytic converter as it examines exhaust fumes for the availability of air. Once it detects a low oxygen presence in the engine’s mixture, it relays the information immediately to the engine control unit. From there, necessary adjustments are done for the engine to have a good mixture of cool air and fuel. Once the vehicle’s power plant is efficient enough, it will no longer emit too much exhaust fumes that are harmful to the atmosphere. These are just some of the many Ford Parts that make the vehicles of the company gentler to the environment.

Ford invests a lot in improving its Ford Parts to become gentler to the environment. This only shows how dedicated the American company is in providing its users with greener options.

This marks a new era in ‘green’ transit.”

Ford Offers green Police Cruisers

The Bush’s administration’s aim to reduce gas consumption by twenty percent in the next ten years has prompted car manufacturers to develop and produce green cars. The Ford Motor Company is one of the car manufacturers leading the way in the production of alternative fuel vehicles. Recently, the Dearborn based auto manufacturer announced that they will be producing an alternative fuel powered Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor for the 2008 model year.

Currently, the Ford Motor Company is the largest manufacturer of police vehicles in the United States. More than 80 percent of police vehicle in operation today came from Ford. And this may still increase as government agencies move to increase their fleet’s fuel efficiency. To support the president’s “Twenty in Ten” goal, government fleets are subscribing to flex fuel vehicles, and the 2008 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor is one of the most promising choices.

Ford will produce a Crown Victoria which can run on gasoline or a combination of both conventional gasoline and bio-ethanol.

Gerald Koss, the Fleet Marketing Manager for Ford, has this to say: “The ability to offer an E85 capable vehicle to our police customers is significant. Many municipalities and states across the country are encouraging, if not mandating, that their police and other government fleet vehicles begin using alternative sources of fuel. We can now help our police fleet customers achieve this goal.”

The introduction of the alternative fuel police vehicle will definitely help the nation’s battle against the threat of global warming. These vehicles will reduce the amount of gasoline consumed by the fleet. The only problem faced by these vehicles is the limited number of refueling stations which provides E85 fuel for those who need it. These vehicles though can be configured to run more efficiently on gasoline with aftermarket parts such as a
Stillen cold air intake system.

Aside from the forthcoming alternative fuel police vehicle, Ford also announced that they can now sell flex fuel vehicles all around the country. Following a 50-state certification for their flex fuel vehicles, Ford is now permitted to sell their green cars on any state in the country. The certification means that the company’s alternative fuel vehicles met emission standards which have been set by the different states of the country. This means that Ford will now have a larger market for their flex fuel vehicles.

And as the demand for fuel efficient vehicles increases, this would translate to higher sales for the second largest U.S. car manufacturer. This development can help the company since they have been experiencing their worst problems in their entire history in the industry. The company’s current lineup of alternative fuel vehicles includes the Ford F-150, the Crown Victoria and the Grand Marquis under the Mercury brand.

Ford at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show

Ford at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show

In the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show, Ford’s Chief Executive Officer Allan Mullaly might as well be a model for a toothpaste ad with his biggest smile caught by press cameras. The CEO left Boeing for Ford more than a year ago, and being a newcomer in the industry, the CEO have made quality changes in his company that the struggling Ford needed for many years. Mullaly keyed in the newly reached tentative contract with the United Auto Workers union that will help Ford generate and save cash for their restructuring program.

Last Thursday, Ford reported a loss of 0 million which is smaller than what the company had expected for the third quarter, worse than their 0 million profit but means a huge improvement with their .2 billion loss in 2006.

As the Los Angeles Auto Show opened, scrutinizing eyes are focused on Ford and what would 2008 be like for the automaker. Financially speaking, Ford is the weakest among the three American Detroit based automakers with its billion loss in 2006. To generate is fund, the company mortgaged all its assets which includes its iconic oval Ford Logo worth billion.

In an interview with Automotive News last week, Mullaly admitted that the money Ford generated may not be enough and Ford is in a “race against the clock”. Even the CEO is uncertain to whether his company will win in this race they are into. For the CEO, the track they are following for their restructuring program is the right path and that “worry about worrying as opposed to worrying about doing” will jeopardize their road to profitability.

An insight of Ford’s 2008 year might be provided by the Los Angeles Auto Show which like other auto shows highlights the usual concepts. The latest green technologies which include Honda’s FCX Concept (with built in Honda oxygen sensor), the first hydrogen fueled car for consumers and the 2008 Green Car of the Year Award are the most awaited for this year. The LA auto show ranked second only to the Detroit Auto Show will also remove the curtains for new high-performance, exotic, futuristic and daring concept cars.

For Ford, the Mustang Bullitt comes back coinciding with the 40th celebration of the Steve Mcqueen movie “Bullitt” featuring several San Francisco car chase. Similarly, the Dodge Challenger inspired movie “Duke of the Hazzards” will also be launched in spring making a fierce contender for Ford’s pony. The Transformer’s Chevrolet Camaro will also be redesigned and will be offered in showrooms in 2009.

Answer by Paul H
first read the instructions if available. one ground is the power ground. the other is the anttenna ground. green is ground typically. I presume this anttenna is motorized to rise and descend. some careful testing double checking is needed
