Going Green with Hybrid Vehicles

Automotive transportation has dramatically altered the environment because it contributes to a majority of greenhouse gases released into the air. Our consumption of gas leaves large quantities of carbon emissions that continue to destroy the environment at an alarming rate. Mending the hole in the ozone layer will take time, but it is only possible through everyone’s participation in the green movement. You can do this in many ways, and one of the most important is by changing your transportation habits. While sitting on a crowed city bus or walking may not appeal to everyone, you can still go green while driving if you switch to an alternative fuel car.

Hybrid vehicles can help you go green by reducing the amount of carbon emissions directly. Since hybrids use a combination of gas and electric power, they run on less gas and thereby create less fuel emissions. Hybrids typically run on 30 mpg or more depending on make and model. Some car manufactures claim you can squeeze out 40 or more mpg, depending on your driving style.

Different types of hybrid vehicles depend on how they operate from gas to electric power. A full hybrid allows the driver to run on just gas, electric power, or both. When driving in typical conditions, the full hybrid relies on power from both the gas engine and electric motor. The electric engine can power the car alone when used for stop-and-go traffic or for low speeds. Both electric and gas motors stop when the car is idling. A mild hybrid contains an electric motor that allows the engine to turn off and start up quickly to reduce gas consumption, but the gas engine is the primary power source. The electric motor in the mild hybrid primarily functions when higher speeds or more power is required.

Electric hybrids are not the only alternative fuel cars on the market. Auto manufacturers continue to experiment with hydrogen powered vehicles, also known as hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. This type of vehicle emits no dangerous greenhouse gases since the byproduct is simply heat and water vapor. Unfortunately, it could take many years before you see these fuel cell vehicles in large numbers due to developmental complications such as affordability, winter driving, and durability.

All electric vehicles are powered by an electric motor that charges from a battery. While these vehicles offer no harmful emissions and inexpensive operating costs, manufactures have failed to create a viable market due to excessive costs to consumers and a short battery life. The battery takes several hours to charge once drained, and can be extremely expensive to replace after only a few years.

Affordability and green power has enabled hybrid vehicles to thrive in this market. It won’t be long before auto manufacturers stop producing gas guzzling vehicles and replace them with alternative fuel cars. People’s budgets and the environment will benefit both now and in the future.

Green Car of the Year Finalists: Hybrid, Electric, and Gas Models

Since Green Car Journal’s launch 18 years ago, the magazine has focused on the crucial intersection of automobiles, energy, and the environment. This was relatively new back in the early 1990s, but no less important than today.

In fact, it was the groundwork laid back then that’s led to the current generation of advanced and efficient vehicles available to us now, and those coming in the short years ahead – cars with electric drive, and vehicles with high efficiency gasoline and diesel internal combustion engines offering truly astonishing fuel economy. Plus, models that achieve ever-higher miles-per-gallon and lower CO2 greenhouse gases due to lightweighting, more sophisticated computer control, or technologies like electro-hydraulic steering and brakes that relieve parasitic load on an engine and allow more efficient operation.

What we’re witnessing today is an auto industry that’s rising to the challenge of providing vehicles that meet increasingly stringent emissions and fuel economy goals, while listening to the voice of the customer and offering these attributes in vehicles they want to buy.

Green Car Journal’s Green Car of the Year® award program honors these vehicles and the environmental leadership they bring to this field. Each year, five finalists are selected to be considered for the award, with dozens of potential nominees weighing in during the selection process.

Green Car Journal editors consider vehicles employing all fuels and technologies in the effort to raise the bar in environmental performance, including high efficiency gasoline internal combustion, advanced diesel, hybrids, electrics, and vehicles capable of running on alternative fuels. Ultimately, five outstanding models make the final cut as nominees.

These nominees rise above the crowd as outstanding examples that forward environmental performance in meaningful and quantifiable ways. Market significance and ‘newness’ are also factors. All nominees must also be on sale by January 1st of the award year.

Finalists will be considered by jurors that include leaders of the nation’s top environmental organizations, including Carl Pope, chairman of the Sierra Club; Frances Beinecke, president of the Natural Resources Defense Council; Jean-Michel Cousteau, president of Ocean Futures Society, and Matt Petersen, president of Global Green USA. Also, Jay Leno, noted auto enthusiast and host of the ‘Tonight Show,’ as well as automotive icon Carroll Shelby, will join Green Car Journal editors on the Green Car of the Year 2011 jury.

For the first time, the Green Car of the Year® finalists include two primarily electric-drive vehicles in addition to two hybrids and a high mile-per-gallon, gasoline internal combustion model. The nominees for the 2011 Green Car of the Year are the 2011 Chevrolet Volt, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, Lincoln MKZ Hybrid, and the Nissan LEAF.

Making the cut to become finalists for the 2011 Green Car of the Year® amid a field replete with notable ‘green’ models is an honor in itself. To acknowledge this, these exemplary vehicles are further distinguished as Green Car Journal’s ‘TOP 5 GREEN CARS FOR 2011.’

These five 2011 Green Car of the Year® finalists reflect an auto industry in transition. It wasn’t long ago when electric drive was a novelty. Now, it’s expected that most auto manufacturers will include electric drive in some form among their model offerings. While four of the five Green Car of the Year finalists do incorporate some form of electric drive, the Ford Fiesta nominee reminds us that internal combustion continues to evolve in important ways that bring new levels of fuel efficiency and environmental performance to conventionally powered models.

The 2011 Green Car of the Year® will be announced at the L.A. Auto Show during the show’s second press day on November 18.

Environmentally Friendly & Green Driving ? 4 Key Considerations to Own Hybrid Cars

More and more people are turning to hybrid cars these days because of their promise of lesser fuel consumption and environmental friendliness. Hybrid cars, because they run on both fuel and battery-powered engines, consume less fuel, thereby reducing the price pressures on consumers in the midst of an global oil crisis. In addition, it also emits significantly less smog pollutants in the air, compared to traditional fuel-operated cars.

Indeed, there are a lot of advantages to owning hybrid cars. This is why even the US government is starting to show support by welcoming more models into the country and by encouraging American auto makers to make more units.

The Key Advantages of Hybrid Cars are as follows:

Efficiency – Hybrid cars are electrically operated and are thus able to function well and consistently at any motor speed. This is in contrast to conventional gas-powered engines, which tend to produce less power in low revolutions per minute episodes. Hybrid cars do not need to use transmissions to make their engines run at full capacity even at reduced speeds.

Economy – One of the advantages of hybrid cars is that the feature called “regenerative braking”. Since a hybrid car works using both electric power and fuel power, each can function by itself or conjunction, depending on which is stronger at the time of use. This means that both engines complement each other and do not simply bog one when one of them becomes weaker.

Convenience – Because hybrid cars are part battery powered, they do not create huge holes on the pocket, compares to users of traditional cars who feel the pain of the continuing oil price increases. Most hybrid cars, particularly the ones that are made in Japan, are also more compact and lightweight, making them easier to maneuver on the road. Other models, particularly those by American and European car makers also do not deviate from the stylish designs their regular counterparts adopt, so users don’t have to feel they are being left out in the style department.

Sustainability – Sure, hybrid cars are fairly new, so their immediate impact on the environment cannot be foreseen in the short term. However, over the course of time, the next generations will definitely be thankful for having a clean, pollution free world, thanks to hybrid vehicles. Most critics say that it is not the time to buy hybrid vehicles because they are expensive. However, when you consider the advantages, you really shouldn’t think twice. While you must be discerning in choosing the right model for your needs, this doesn’t mean you start hesitating. After all, when more people patronize hybrid cars, manufacturers will see the need to produce more and eventually bring its price at very affordable levels.

In time to come, environmentally friendly hybrid cars will be the order of the day.

Saturn Aura Green Line Hybrid Review

Since being introduced at the North American International Auto Show in January 2005, the car has become widely popular, both as a standard vehicle and now as a hybrid version, the Saturn Aura Green Line. The popularity of this vehicle, in both forms, has been heralded as “the best thing to happen to Saturn since its inception” by Edmunds. In fact, the 2007 Saturn Aura won the North American Car of the Year award.

GM likes to add that the green Aura is the lowest priced hybrid on the market, and a ,300 hybrid tax credit from the IRS may also be available to those who qualify. The hybrid version of the Aura features the same safety package that earned it’s gas-only twin a five star government safety rating for both frontal and side-impact crash tests.

The second hybrid to come from GM and Saturn (right behind the Saturn Vue Green Line), this four-door sedan is considered a mild hybrid and runs on a 2.4l Ecotech Engine with an electric motor/generator and 4T45-E four-speed transmission. However, this difference under the hood does not result in drastic differences in fuel economy. While the Aura Green Line gets 24 MPG in the city and 32 on the highway, its standard-vehicle sister, the Aura XE gets 22 MPG in the city and 30 on the highway.

One interesting feature in this entry-level hybrid is the air conditioning features. The driver can choose if the air is cooled using energy from the battery or the engine. If the AC is set to 65 or above, it can run on pure electricity – meaning no more debates about whether it is more efficient to roll the windows down or crank the air conditioner.

With the 2008 Aura Green Line starting at ,550, it represents a good deal for anyone in the market for a hybrid car. With the room you’d expect from a standard sedan, slight fuel economy over the standard versions, and utilization of greener technology, we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how far Saturn has come since the days of its plastic hatchbacks. Just don’t expect the substantial savings (financial and environmental) that you would see with a full hybrid. In addition, you might have to contact quite a few dealers to get a test drive of a new hybrid Aura as these hybrids are in very limited production and are only available in select markets.

Since the hybrid Saturn Vue is scheduled to get the 2 mode hybrid system, beginning production in late 2008, we can only hope that news of a 2009 or 2010 Saturn Aura Green Line Two Mode won’t be far behind.
