Kolkata auto part SMEs yet to see a complete turnaround

Although the Indian auto sector may have been able to tide over the recessionary pressures owing to surge in auto sales, small-scale auto parts vendors in Kolkata are still to witness green shoots. Undoubtedly, recessionary pressures are ebbing, thereby providing cheer to the city’s auto SME vendors but the ride is still far from being smooth for them.

Kolkata-based SME auto parts manufacturers and suppliers are still struggling to stay afloat and looking for ways that can help them recover their business losses suffered during the last financial year, due to the global economic slowdown. Not many city-based small auto components manufacturers foresee a complete turnaround before the beginning of the next financial year.

Worst over, but problems still persists

SMEs in Kolkata’s auto parts sector expect a complete recovery not before March-April 2010, when hopes will be pinned on the annual budget with the expectation that the government will initiate series of measures to help the industry emerge from the crisis.

“The worst is now over, but we are still to gain the momentum that we enjoyed before the crisis. The losses incurred during the recession are huge and we hope to recover most of it with the help of government support,” said Dharmesh Gupta, proprietor of Dayal Auto Services, a small-sized auto parts supplier in Kolkata.

Even though sales have improved this year as compared to last year, problems for the city’s auto parts sector seem to have compounded. Many of the SME auto parts manufacturers had expanded their capacities in the hope of gaining contracts from the Tata Nano factory in Singur. However, the Nano-exit from Singur has left them in a quandary.

“Most of the small-scale auto vendors in the city purchased new machineries, while many expanded their production facilities in hope of supplying parts to Tata Nano factory. Now, they are clueless as to how to use their enhanced capacities,” said Sanjay Mehta, proprietor of Supreme Auto Motors, a small-sized auto parts supplier.

Although the market demand has picked up and sales have soared following the rise in business sentiment on both global and domestic fronts, ground realities for Kolkata-based SME auto parts exporters and suppliers still remain weak.

The Complete Guide For Green Power ? Part 1

The Complete Guide For Green Power – Part 1

Green Power Defined

The term green power is used in a number of different ways. In the broadest sense, green power refers to environmentally preferable energy and energy technologies, both electric and thermal. This definition of green power includes many types of power, from solar photovoltaic systems to wind turbines to fuel cells for automobiles.

In this guide, green power refers specifically to electricity generated from a subset of renewable resources, including solar, wind, geothermal, biogas, biomass, and low-impact hydroelectric sources. These electricity sources are derived from natural resources that replenish themselves over short periods of time, including the sun, wind, moving water, organic plant and waste material (biomass), and the Earth’s heat (geothermal).

Note that the terms green power, environmentally preferable, clean power, and renewable energy may be used in slightly different ways, which differ primarily according to the varying assessments of the environmental impacts of harnessing specific resources and of the relative significance of each impact. The exact definitions of these terms, while always important, take on added significance when dealing with state and federal government requirements or determining eligibility for government and utility incentives. For more discussion of how each of the organizations that collaborated on this document defines green power, please refer to their Web sites, listed in Chapter 10, Resources for Additional Information.

The Benefits and Costs of Green Power

The Benefits

Green power can offer organizations a variety of environmental, financial, stakeholder relations, economic development, and national security benefits. This Guide is designed to help buyers navigate the costs, contracting challenges, and public relations risks.

Environmental

Reduce environmental impacts. Conventional electricity generation is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions as well as the single largest industrial source of air pollution in the U.S. The emissions from conventional electricity generation contribute to a number of serious environmental problems, including acid rain, fine particulate pollution, and climate change. Green power generates less pollution than conventional power and produces no net increase in greenhouse gas emissions, helping protect human health and the environment.

Financial

Provide a hedge against risks posed by:

Electricity price volatility. Purchasing electricity generated by renewable energy sources may provide the buyer protection against unstable or rising fossil fuel prices, for example through long-term, fixed-price supply contracts directly with developers or generators. Organizations can also encourage stable electricity prices by supporting new renewable power resources on the local grid, thereby diversifying the energy mix with resources that are not subject to the rise and fall of fuel costs.

Fuel supply disruptions. On-site renewable generation can reduce the risk of disruptions in fuel supplies, like natural gas, resulting from transportation difficulties or international conflict.

Additional environmental regulation. To address global climate change and regional air quality issues, federal and state regulations could effectively increase the price of conventional electricity, making green power financially more attractive.

Stakeholder Relations

Meet organizational environmental objectives. Reducing an organization’s environmental impact is one of the main motivations for buying green power and is often important to stakeholders. For example, buying green power can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from electricity consumption. If an organization is interested in creating a third-party certified environmental management system (e.g., ISO-14001 certification for environmental performance) or is conducting an organization-wide inventory of its greenhouse gas emissions, a program for reducing emissions will be an important part of this certification process. increase the price of conventional electricity, making green power financially more attractive.

Demonstrate civic leadership. Being among the first in a community to purchase green power is a demonstration of civic leadership. It makes a statement that an organization is willing to act on its stated environmental or social goals. These purchases also demonstrate an organization’s responsiveness to its customers, the majority of whom favor renewable energy. See Chapter 10, Resources for Additional Information, for details.

Generate positive publicity. Buying green power affords an opportunity for and builds on existing public recognition and public relations activities. Companies that are in the public eye need to be responsive to the concerns of environmentally conscious customers, shareholders, regulators, and other constituents. Programs promoting green power, such as EPA’s Green Power Partnership or Green-e Marketplace, provide assistance in reaching broad audiences to convey the benefits of green power purchases.

Improve employee morale. Progressive action and leadership on environmental issues like renewable energy may improve employee morale, which in turn can reduce employee turnover, attract new employees, and improve productivity. In a survey of 464 organizations, sponsored by the National Wind Coordinating Collaborative, improving employee morale was cited as the third most important motivation for buying green power.

Differentiate products or services. By purchasing green power, a company may be able to differentiate its products or services by, for example, offering them as “made with certified renewable energy.” Purchasers of green power can also join their power supplier to market their products together. In addition, purchasers of products certified by the Center for Resource Solutions’ Green-e Marketplace program can display the Green-e logo on their product packaging to indicate a commitment to using 100 percent green power in the manufacturing of the product. Many companies are also finding that producing their products with green power gives them an advantage in selling to their business customers who are trying to “green” their supply chain.

Do Your Part To Go Green – Use Amsoil

Amsoil is not new to the green movement.  Since 1972 Amsoil has been recommending oil changes with their synthetic oils at 25,000 mile change intervals under normal driving conditions (12,500 Severe Driving). Think of all the oil we would have saved as a nation if we were to follow these recommendations set some 35 + years ago by Amsoil.  Ok I know you are thinking 25,000 miles!!!  Yep, all with a warranty that is unmatched in the oil industry.  Recently they have introduced an oil with 1 year 35,000 mile drain intervals under normal service and 17,500 miles under severe service.  No other company comes even close to an oil that lasts this long.

Ok.. Ok.. I know what you are thinking  -that’s insane I would never let my oil go that long.  Fine but let your oil go longer than 3000 miles. With the introduction of oil life monitors GM has been able to push oil changes as high as 12,000 miles.  This is with conventional oil folks.  Everyone knows that synthetic last longer and protects better. Is it really so hard to believe that a quality synthetic oil can go 25,000-35,000 miles   Even back in 2005 the average oil change drain interval in Europe was 10,000 miles.

Here is where people tend to get upset because they do not like being lied to and deceived.

The same cars that are in Europe going 10,000  miles or more on oil changes are some of the same cars sold here in America with oil change recommendations of less miles.

Why do you think that is?  Greed!  Yes pure and simple greed -big oil is big money!   Listen Mobil had a 25,000 mile oil back in the 1970′s after Amsoil had one on the market!  Shortly after the introduction of their so called new formula they stopped marketing it as a 25,000 mile drain interval oil, and then somewhere around 2005 came out with Mobil 1 Extended Performance with a 15,000 mile oil change interval.  Where did this oil go that they had back in the ’70′s?  They buried it to sell more oil for 30 plus years and get in good with car manufacturers.  Do you think car manufacturers think Amsoil is a bad product? Or do you think Mobil has pushed their way in as factory fill by using money and marketing techniques?  Mobil or any other oil manufacturer does not want to get on the bad side of the auto service industry.  If Mobil was pushing 25,000 mile oil change intervals do you think that they would be the factory fill for some vehicles?  Here is something to consider and take note of.  The Mobil Extended Performance Warranty does not cover your car if it is under factory warranty. From my perspective I feel that Mobil does not want to get involved with the manufacturers if a claim were to be placed while using their oil.  Also, this would hurt the service department at the dealerships that service these vehicles.  They would see the customer much less and it in turn would hurt revenue.  This would get Mobil on the bad side of the auto industry, so for now Mobil will not recommend a drain interval that is any higher then the info in your owners manual unless your car is out of warranty.

Here is another way of putting this into perspective.  Lets say in 2011 GM came out with a new Corvette factory filled with Mobil 1, and the owners manual stated oil change intervals at 25,000 miles.  Certainly most Corvette owners would not go this far on an oil change but Mobil would certainly provide an oil that meets the specifications of the manufacturer for this application. Nothing more, nothing less!  While this may not happen with GM I really do believe sometime in the near future a car manufacturer will push oil change recommendations to this level, and Mobil will be right there to claim their spot with some new product that meets these recommendations while they have had it all along.

You see big oil is not about go green or looking out for the best interest of the public.  It is all about selling as much oil as they can PERIOD.

This kind of marketing an thinking has made big oil millions/billions of dollars over the past 30 years.   This is called market timing – now that new car owner manuals have recommended oil changes much higher than 3000 miles Mobil has decided to unleash their awesome NEW Product.. Here is a direct quote from the Mobil 1 Extended Performance site “You’ve never seen an oil like this before. Mobil 1 Extended Performance is a high-endurance motor oil designed for longer service intervals”

If you are looking for a company that stands behind their products, and supports the people that get them to the marketplace consider Amsoil for all your lubricant needs.

Also worth noting. Amsoil also gained the naming rights to the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center. It will be called the Amsoil Center.  Upon Completion it will be the 2nd building in the nation to meet the LEED Gold Standard.
