You decide one hot, sunny day that your car needs a wash and wax. You hop in your vehicle and head to the local auto store to choose and purchase your supplies. As you’re checking out, you’re asking whether you want paper or plastic. Then just as you’re about to make your decision, you’re asked, “Do you want to purchase reusable shopping bags for .99 apiece?” You decide to go with the reusable bags. Back at home, you start to clean your car, wondering if there’s anything else you can do to be friendly to the environment.

First, consider your car and what kind it is. What was one of its biggest selling points for you? Was it the mileage and how low it was or the horsepower underneath the hood? No doubt, car manufacturers have thwarted several attempts to be eco-friendly by giving people what they want with what they don’t want. A muscle car of the 1960s was built with tons of horsepower but only got 12 to 15 miles per gallon. It wasn’t uncommon to find some of these cars with only 10 miles per gallon. In today’s society, cars can go to zero to 60 in mere seconds and give car owners at least 20 miles or more per gallon.

Of course, the condition of the car hasn’t changed. As long as you give your car a tune up and clean the filers, the vehicle will run better and cleaner, meaning it’ll be better for the environment. Make sure to check out your tires’ pressure since low pressure can reduce the gas mileage by about 15 percent. If you don’t already have a tire pressure gauge or filters, consider heading back to the store with your reusable cotton bags to purchase them.

If you do choose to go out again, perhaps you can consolidate that trip. Consider heading to the grocery store and get some food along with other car necessities you need. If you notice the place that you go to purchase your groceries doesn’t solve your auto supply needs, stop at the local auto store while you’re out.

Another way to be eco-friendly is to carpool. Many states have a rideshare program that help people to get to work but it’s a bit ineffective for a variety of reasons. First, people may have trouble getting their work schedules on the same page. Second, they may not be comfortable posting their work schedule for anyone to see. An alternative to this is to share rides with a neighbor. These are people you most likely know and often spend time with. Not only are you being eco-friendly but you’re having adult conversations.

As we can see, reusable grocery bags are just the beginning to living eco-friendly and saving the environment. When it comes to our cars, we can use our vehicles in an eco-friendly manner.

The ScanGaugeII includes a diagnostic scan tool that can check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), clear the codes, and turn off the “Check Engine” light on 99% of 1996 and newer vehicles. (However, this feature may not work on some trouble codes in Dodge vehicles.) If any DTCs are found, the ScanGauge will show how many there are as well as the codes themselves. Have you thought about keeping your vehicle “green” especially now that you’ve started back to school or you’re using your vehicle everyday to drive to work  Most of us want to protect the environment.  We want to be environmentally “green.”  We want our vehicles to be environmentally “green” because going green could add up to significant savings for us in many ways.

 

By ensuring vehicular environmental responsibility, we are also ensuring that our vehicles are efficient.  Most vehicles operate when air and fuel mixture is ignited within the engine.  The combustion provides the energy that operates and propels the vehicle.  The ideal ratio of air and fuel is 14 parts of air to 1 part of fuel.  When the ratio moves too far away from the mixture, the engines does not operate efficiently as it should.  The fuel economy is poor and the power of the vehicle decreases.  It causes pollutants to enter the exhaust system, which increases pollution.

 

One way to maximize fuel efficiency as well as protect the environment is to install a new set of spark plugs.  Also, it is important to properly check the vehicle’s maintenance.  You should make sure the vehicle’s oxygen sensors are operating properly.  When operating properly the oxygen sensors help keep harmful emissions at a minimum and your vehicle’s performance at it’s best.

April is being observed as the National Alternative Fuel Autos Month by the auto industry in the United States. In connection with this, the R.L Polk and Co. undertook a study to find out the number of flex fuel vehicles on the country’s roads.

In Florida, the study found out that the population of alternative fuel vehicles is at 593,000 units last year. That number includes hybrid vehicles, E85 powered vehicles, and those vehicles which are made to be capable of running on biodiesel. The figure shows an improvement of 22.1 percent compared to the number of green vehicles in 2005.

Two years ago, the number of alternative fuel vehicles in the state of Florida is estimated to be about 486,000.

Dave McCurdy, the President of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, has this to say about the result of the study: “I am proud to see that the sales of Alternative Fuel Autos are rising. The auto industry is a new industry; manufacturers are committed to selling vehicles that can run on something other than just gasoline, and consumers are taking notice.”

The demand for green cars is the result of the increasing awareness of the threat of global warming amongst American car buyers. Recent spikes in the price of gasoline have forced motorists to look for more fuel efficient vehicles. In Florida, the demand is hugely evidenced by the growing number of alternative fuel vehicles. The state has the third most number of alternative fuel vehicles in the entire land.

In the United States, car manufacturers play a major role in the increase of the number of alternative fuel vehicle out in the roads. They have designed and produced alternative fuel vehicles to address the demand of American motorists. In the year 2000, there are only twelve models of alternative fuel vehicles available for the public.

After seven years, the number of alternative fuel vehicle models has been multiplied by five so much so that the numbers now equal to a high of sixty. Among the sixty models of alternative fuel vehicles are hybrid electric vehicles, bio-ethanol capable flex fuel vehicles, and biodiesel engined vehicles. The increasing choice of alternative fuel vehicles in the United States played a key role in the huge sales figure of green vehicle last year.

In 2006, more than 1.5 million units of alternative fuel vehicles are sold. That number surpassed the Alliance’s expected sales.

The auto makers’ effort to meet the demand for clean vehicles is said to have played a major role in the increased number of alternative fuel vehicles on U.S. roads. According to Walter Dartland, the Executive Director of Consumer Federation of the Southeast, “One of the best ways to address greater fuel efficiency, and less dependence on oil is to drive an alternative fuel automobile. With so many different models currently available, it’s clear that auto manufacturers are responding to the wants and needs of today’s drivers.”
